Two of the five actives in Slimqa Slim Coffee Booster have authorised wording: chromium (100 µg) and caffeine (120 mg). Here is what each is, where you find it in food and what the label may say.
A coffee-based supplement stands or falls on its label, and two of the five actives in Slimqa Slim Coffee Booster are the ones with authorised wording: chromium and caffeine. This guide explains what each is, where you meet it in everyday food, what a stick provides and exactly what the permitted statements say. For the full product picture, see the Slimqa home page. The other three actives are covered in the ingredients explained guide.
What is chromium?
Chromium is a trace mineral, which means the body needs it only in tiny amounts. It is found in small quantities in many foods, so most people who eat a varied diet take in some every day. Foods that contain it include:
- broccoli and other vegetables
- wholegrain bread and cereals
- potatoes
- meat, such as beef and poultry
- some fruit, such as apples and bananas
The amount in a food depends on the soil, the processing and the way it was cooked, so exact figures vary a great deal from one plate to the next. That is one reason chromium is measured in micrograms (µg), which are thousandths of a milligram.
Chromium picolinate in Slimqa
The chromium in Slimqa is listed as chromium picolinate. Picolinate is simply the form of the mineral: chromium bound to picolinic acid, a substance the body also makes. It is one of the forms commonly used in food supplements. Each stick provides 100 µg of chromium.
What does 250% of the NRV mean?
The nutrient reference value (NRV) is the figure used on UK and EU labels as a benchmark for an average adult. For chromium it is 40 µg a day. One stick gives 100 µg, so the label shows 250% of the NRV. Read that as a plain piece of arithmetic: 100 divided by 40 is 2.5. It tells you how the stick compares with the reference amount, not how much you need.
A percentage above 100 is common for minerals in supplements, but it is a good reason to check the other products you take. Multivitamins often include chromium too, so add the amounts together and stick to one Slimqa stick a day.
What may be said about chromium
In Great Britain, health statements for food are drawn from a list of authorised wording. For chromium, two statements apply to foods that supply a meaningful amount of the mineral, and one stick of Slimqa comfortably qualifies:
- Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism.
- Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels.
"Macronutrients" simply means the main components of food that give us energy: carbohydrate, protein and fat. "Normal" is the important word in both sentences. The statements describe the role chromium plays as part of ordinary body function. They do not say Slimqa will change anything beyond that, and nothing on this page should be read as a promise of a particular result.
What is caffeine?
Caffeine is a natural substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruits of several plants. You meet it most often in:
- coffee, from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant
- tea, from the leaves of the tea plant, which is why a builder's brew counts
- cocoa and chocolate, in smaller amounts
- guarana and kola nut, which are added to some soft and energy drinks
Britain is a nation of tea drinkers, but coffee has long since caught up in the high street. Either way, caffeine is probably the most familiar active substance in the British diet.
Chromium and caffeine in one stick, stirred into your coffee
Discover Slimqa now Food supplement. Not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet. Contains caffeine. Adults only (18+).What may be said about caffeine
Two statements are authorised for caffeine, and they apply when a food provides at least 75 mg of caffeine per serving. A Slimqa stick contains 120 mg, so the wording can be used:
- Caffeine helps to increase alertness.
- Caffeine helps to improve concentration.
Again, the wording is deliberately modest. It describes what caffeine does in general, in people who consume it in the amounts stated. It does not say that every person will feel the same, and it is not a reason to take more than the recommended stick.
120 mg in context
The European Food Safety Authority considers that up to 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources does not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, and that single doses up to 200 mg are also fine. A stick sits well inside the single-dose figure. What matters is the total for your day:
| Typical day | Approximate caffeine |
|---|---|
| One stick in your morning mug | 120 mg |
| Stick plus a mug of tea at lunch | about 195 mg |
| Stick plus a mug of filter coffee and a can of cola | about 300 mg |
The tea, coffee and cola amounts are typical NHS figures for a mug or can (about 75 mg, 140 mg and 40 mg respectively). Pregnant and breastfeeding women are asked to keep their caffeine low or avoid it, and this product is not recommended for them. Our safety and suitability guide goes through the practical advice.
Why put chromium and caffeine in a coffee stick?
It is a sensible pairing from a formulation point of view. Coffee is already the way many people start the day, so a stick that dissolves into the cup asks for no new habit. Caffeine fits naturally with the drink, and chromium is a trace mineral that suits a small powder dose. Slimqa's maker also adds green coffee extract, L-carnitine and curcumin to the same stick. Those three have no authorised health statements, which is why this site only describes them: see green coffee extract and L-carnitine and curcumin.
Reading the label like a pro
- Find the serving: here it is one stick of 2 g.
- Check the amount: chromium 100 µg, caffeine 120 mg.
- Look at the % NRV column. Chromium shows 250%. Caffeine has no NRV, so it shows a dash.
- Check the wording against the authorised list. If a claim goes beyond "contributes to" or "helps to", ask why.
- Add up everything else you take with caffeine or chromium.
A sensible way to use it
Keep to one stick a day, stirred into coffee or water, ideally with breakfast. Follow your usual morning routine and treat the stick as one of your caffeine servings, not an extra. If you are curious about the practical side, how to take it has preparation tips for hot and iced coffee, and price and ordering shows how the manufacturer's order page works. Remember that Slimqa is a food supplement and does not replace a varied, balanced diet.
Frequently asked questions
How much chromium is in one Slimqa stick?
100 µg of chromium, as chromium picolinate. That is 250% of the nutrient reference value of 40 µg.
What does chromium contribute to?
The authorised statements say that chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels.
What do the authorised caffeine statements say?
Caffeine helps to increase alertness and helps to improve concentration. These apply when a food provides at least 75 mg of caffeine per serving; a Slimqa stick has 120 mg.
Is 120 mg of caffeine a lot?
It is about the same as a mug of instant or filter coffee. For healthy adults, up to 400 mg a day from all sources is not considered a concern by EFSA, so count your other tea, coffee and energy drinks.
Can I take more than one stick for more chromium or caffeine?
No. The recommended dose is one stick a day. Do not exceed it.
Is Slimqa suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for anyone under 18.
