L-Carnitine and Curcumin in Slimqa Sticks: Plain-Language Facts

Slimqa Slim Coffee Booster box and stick

One Slimqa stick holds 300 mg of L-carnitine and 100 mg of curcumin. This guide explains what each one is, where it appears in food, and which cautions are printed on the box.

Two of the five active ingredients in Slimqa Slim Coffee Booster have names that sound more technical than they are. Below we explain both in everyday language, with kitchen-table examples. If you would like the whole product first, the Slimqa home page has the summary.

The two ingredients in numbers

IngredientPer stick (2 g)% DV
L-carnitine300 mgNot established
Curcumin (from turmeric extract, 95% curcuminoids)100 mgNot established

Neither has a Daily Value, so the label reports milligrams only. On this site we describe what the ingredients are and how much is in a stick, without attaching any health statements.

What is L-carnitine?

L-carnitine is an amino acid compound. The body makes it on its own, mostly in the liver and kidneys, using building blocks it gets from protein. It is also present in food, and it is stored mainly in muscle tissue. You do not need to think of it as exotic. It is part of ordinary biology and of ordinary groceries.

Where L-carnitine shows up in food

Animal foods are the richest everyday sources. Rough, typical amounts vary quite a lot depending on the cut and the cooking, but the general ranking holds:

Slimqa is described by the manufacturer as vegan, so the L-carnitine in the stick is not taken from animal sources. A stick holds 300 mg, which for comparison is more than a steak dinner typically provides. We note that as a fact and nothing more.

What is curcumin?

Curcumin is the best-known member of a group of yellow-orange plant pigments called curcuminoids. They come from turmeric (Curcuma longa), a root related to ginger. The Slimqa label specifies curcumin from turmeric extract at 95% curcuminoids, a concentrated form that is far stronger than the spice jar in your cabinet. Ground turmeric itself is made up of only a few percent curcuminoids.

Why curcumin stains everything yellow

Curcumin is a strong natural pigment, which is why turmeric is also used as a food coloring. Anyone who has cooked a curry knows the result: yellow fingertips, a yellow cutting board and a yellow sponge. A powder stick is far tidier, but if you spill one, wipe it up promptly with a damp cloth and keep it away from light-colored countertops and towels.

What the label says about L-carnitine

The Supplement Facts panel lists "L-carnitine" and 300 mg, and it does not name a specific salt or form. We do not guess at one. What we can say is that the "L" in the name refers to the form in which the molecule occurs in the body and in food. If you want more detail, the manufacturer's contact information on its order page is the place to ask.

Where turmeric and curcumin show up in the kitchen

Turmeric gives curry powder its warm yellow color. It also colors ordinary yellow mustard, lends golden tones to rice dishes, and has become popular in "golden milk" lattes at coffee shops. Cooking with turmeric is a pleasant way to enjoy the spice, but the amount of curcumin you would get from a pinch in a stew is small compared with the 100 mg in a stick.

Black pepper extract on the label

The list of other ingredients includes black pepper extract. Pepper is another kitchen staple, and it is listed here simply because it is part of the formula. We report it for completeness so that you know exactly what you are reading on the box.

The curcumin caution, in plain words

The label carries a specific note: if you have gallbladder or liver conditions, or you take blood thinners, consult your doctor before using. Blood thinners include anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin. It is also wise to mention any upcoming surgery or procedure when you ask. A pharmacist can often answer these questions quickly, and you can bring the box so that they see the exact amounts. For a broader look at who the sticks suit, read our safety and suitability guide.

Reading these ingredients together

A Slimqa stick is a combination, not a single-ingredient capsule. Besides L-carnitine and curcumin, it contains 100 mcg of chromium (286% of the Daily Value), 120 mg of caffeine and 100 mg of green coffee bean extract. Because of the caffeine, the stick is not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women. You can see how those two relate in our guide on chromium and caffeine, or learn about the green coffee bean extract.

A grocery-cart way to picture it

Imagine two shopping lists. One has beef, milk and cheddar; those are the everyday homes of L-carnitine. The other has a jar of turmeric, curry powder and yellow mustard; those are the homes of curcuminoids. Both lists are ordinary. A supplement stick simply collects measured amounts of each, in a form you can stir into a cup. That is the entire idea, and the label shows the amounts so nothing is a mystery.

If you eat mostly plants

People who follow vegetarian or vegan eating patterns often take in less dietary L-carnitine, because the richest foods are animal-based. That is a simple observation about where it occurs, not a recommendation to take anything. If your diet is plant-based and you are curious about your own intake, a registered dietitian is a good person to talk to. Curcumin works differently here: turmeric is a plant, so it appears in plant-based cooking just as often as anywhere else.

Questions to ask yourself before starting

If you answered unsure to any of the last three, a quick call to your doctor or pharmacist is a sensible first step.

How to take it

The directions are the same as for the rest of the stick: one stick a day, stirred into coffee or water, ideally with a meal. Do not exceed the recommended daily serving. Our page on how to take Slimqa shares preparation ideas for hot and iced drinks.
